What Are Digraphs? 🤔
Digraphs are two letters that come together to make one sound.
For example:
- sh in ship
- ch in chair
- th in this
Even though there are two letters, we hear only one sound. That’s what makes digraphs special!
Types of Digraphs
Examples:
- sh → ship
- ch → chop
- th → this, that
- wh → wheel
- ph → phone
📌 These are the most common digraphs children learn first.
2. Consonant Blends 🔀
Blends are a little different!
👉 In blends:
- Each letter keeps its own sound
- The sounds are just blended together
👉 Examples:
- bl → black
- tr → tree
- st → star
📌 Tip:
- Digraph = 1 sound
- Blend = 2 sounds together
3. Vowel Digraphs 🌈
These are made using two vowels together.
👉 Examples:
- ai → rain
- ee → tree
- oa → boat
- ea → leaf
📌 Vowel digraphs help children read longer words easily.
